Visa Information System (VIS)

The Visa Information System (VIS) is an IT system that allows Schengen states to exchange visa information.

The main purpose of the VIS is to simplify the process of issuing visas, speed up border control and increase the security of both Schengen countries and visa applicants.

VIS works thanks to the connection of the system's central database with consular offices of the Schengen countries and border control points.

Main changes in the visa application process:

• First-time applicants after the introduction of the VIS are required to appear in person at the consular office to collect biometric data - all fingerprints and a photo.
• Fingerprint scans are stored in the system for 59 consecutive months for re-use for subsequent visa applications.
• Directly at the border, border authorities can verify the identity of persons entering the Schengen area thanks to the information entered into the system.

The following categories of applicants are exempted from the requirement to provide fingerprints:

• Children under 12 are exempt from the requirement to provide fingerprints.

• People where fingerprinting is physically impossible.

  If less than 10 fingerprints can be taken, then as many as possible should be taken. Where it is temporarily impossible to collect fingerprints, the applicant is required to provide the fingerprints with the next visa application.

• Heads of state or government, members of government and members of their official delegations when invited by Member State governments or by international organizations for an official purpose.
• Monarchs and senior members of the royal family when invited by national governments or international organizations for official purposes.

THE RIGHT OF PERSONS TO BE INFORMED ABOUT DATA PROCESSING IN THE SCHENGEN INFORMATION SYSTEM (SIS) AND THE VISA INFORMATION SYSTEM (VIS)

Central Technical Authority of the National Information System - Police Commander in Chief COT KSI the central technical authority of the National Information System is the administrator within the meaning of Art. 4 point 7 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46 / EC (general regulation on data protection - GDPR), regarding the use of data through the National Information System (KSI), processed in the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the Visa Information System (VIS).

According to Art. 15 GDPR, each person has the right to obtain from the administrator comprehensive information regarding the processing of his personal data.
